Mark Donofrio is an architect, structural designer and Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Oregon. He is responsible for the core structures curriculum for both the B.Arch and M.Arch programs. He serves as an advisor for graduate and undergraduate research projects through the PhD and MS Arch Programs and the Honors College. He teaches core, intermediate, and advanced design studios, as well as advanced technical electives that examine the relationship between geometry, structure, architecture, construction and ecology.

Donofrio is director of the Building Ecology Lab, a trans-disciplinary research laboratory examining the interdependencies and influences of building and natural environments. Donofrio’s experience as an architect and engineer in professional practice has informed the integrative and collaborative trajectory of his work. The Building Ecology Lab brings together designers and scientists in order to discover the interconnections between building and nature and the effects of these interconnections.

Donofrio is also active in the TallWood Design Institute (TDI), a collaboration between Oregon State University and the University of Oregon that brings together programs in architecture, wood science, and engineering to focus on the development and application of innovative wood products and building components. He has worked on demonstration projects and has consulted with several architecture firms on the implementation of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and Mass Plywood Panels (MPP) for projects in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

His research has been published in the Journal of Architectural Computing and has been presented at international conferences including the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC); the International Conference on Structures and Architecture (ICSA); International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS); the International Conference on Sustainable Design, Engineering and Construction (ICSDEC); World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE); and the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA).
