Edward and Mary Allen Technical Teaching Fellows

In the Winter and Spring 2026 terms, six Allen Technical Teaching Fellows—funded through the Allen Technical Teaching Endowment—will support the Department of Architecture Advanced Design Studios (ARCH 4/585 and ARCH 4/586). These professionals bring cutting-edge expertise in areas such as materials, construction, structures, and environmental systems, directly enriching the studio experience. Through lectures, tutorials, workshops, desk crits (remote or in-person), and participation in reviews, they introduce students to the latest tools, methods, and case studies that will enhance their design work.

The fellowship is designed to strengthen the integration of technical subjects into architectural education while promoting a deeper understanding of sustainable resource use. Each studio instructor might work with one or more fellows for one or both terms, depending on the needs of their course. The fellowship may be used to support travel, lodging, and per diem expenses for in-person engagements. Ultimately, this initiative reinforces excellence in integrated design and supports a dynamic learning environment for both graduate and undergraduate students.

Ed and Mary Allen also created the Allen Endowed Fund for Teaching of Architectural Technology, which supports a Technical Teaching in Architecture graduate certificate, a program designed for graduate students interested in the integration of technical building and engineering information with the design education process.
